Jayme R. Hiratzka, M.D.

Jayme R. Hiratzka, M.D., is a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon trained in treating all areas of spinal pathology from the base of the skull to the SI joint. Dr. Hiratzka joins Southern Oregon Orthopedics in Medford and Grants Pass, Oregon, after eight years of academic practice at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).

In addition to treating common adult degenerative conditions using both open and minimally invasive techniques, Dr. Hiratzka is highly experienced with the most complex of spinal conditions, including trauma, deformity (scoliosis), and spinal oncology.

Dr. Hiratzka has spent the last three years as the Spine Surgery Fellowship Director at OHSU, responsible for the training of post-residency orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons in the art and science of spine surgery. He has been asked to teach courses in surgical technique across the US for both new and established surgeons. In addition to authoring 30 research articles as well as several textbook chapters, Dr. Hiratzka has presented his work nationally and internationally, and his scholarly work has been cited nearly 400 times by other authors.

As a former collegiate athlete and active masters athlete, Dr. Hiratzka understands the importance of physical activity for overall health and wellness in patients of all ages. Philosophically, Dr. Hiratzka believes in utilizing conservative treatment options whenever possible. When appropriate, minimally invasive and motion-preserving technologies can be used to allow for a return to the highest levels of recreational activity and daily function.
