What is a hip replacement?

Hip replacement is a surgical procedure to replace part or all of your hip joint. This ball-in-socket joint is the largest in your body and is made up of bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons that work together to give you mobility.

If you damage any of these structures in your hip or you have a condition like arthritis, it can lead to chronic pain and inflammation that limits what you can do physically. When conservative treatment can’t relieve your pain or improve your hip’s mobility, you might need hip replacement surgery.

This type of surgery can also address osteonecrosis, a condition that can develop when a hip fracture or dislocation limits the blood supply to your hip joint and causes the joint to collapse.

What is involved in hip replacement surgery?

The orthopedic surgeons at Southern Oregon Orthopedics can often use minimally invasive techniques to replace your natural hip joint with a synthetic joint. These techniques only require small incisions in your hip to access your joint, so you can heal faster and have less risk for complications.

There are several types of hip replacement surgeries available including:

Anterior hip replacement

Anterior hip replacement is a minimally invasive surgical technique that requires only a three-to-four-inch incision on the front of your hip to access the joint.

The surgeons can replace your natural joint with the artificial joint without removing any tendons. This type of surgery may not be suitable for those with a body mass index (BMI) over 35 or those with complex hip disorders.

Total hip replacement

During a total hip replacement, the surgeons use arthroplasty techniques to remove damaged portions of cartilage and bone and replace them with a prosthetic joint.

Screws or cement help hold the socket in place, and your surgeon inserts a spacer between the new ball and socket to ensure it glides freely.

Unlike anterior hip replacement, total hip replacement has no age or weight restrictions.
