What is an X-ray?
An X-ray is a painless imaging test that allows your doctor to see structures inside your body, particularly the bones. X-ray images help the team at Southern Oregon Orthopedics diagnose injuries and conditions so they can recommend the best course of treatment.
Having X-ray imaging technology and a qualified staff right in the office helps them provide you with efficient and effective orthopedic care. In addition to X-rays, they also offer on-site magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fluoroscopy, and bracing and splinting services.
How does an X-ray work?
During an X-ray, a machine sends high-energy electromagnetic rays through a part of your body. As the rays pass through you, some tissues absorb the energy more than others. Dense tissues like bone appear as white on an X-ray image while softer tissues like muscle and fat show up as different shades of gray.
Your technician positions you so that only the specific part of your body being X-rayed is under the machine. They may ask you to remove any metal objects, including jewelry and eyeglasses.
Fluoroscopy is a special type of X-ray that shows images moving in real-time. Fluoroscopy may be necessary to accurately diagnose conditions in complex joints like the hand and wrist.
Why would I need an X-ray?
An X-ray is a commonly used diagnostic test in orthopedic medicine. Your Southern Oregon Orthopedics provider may order an X-ray to help them diagnose conditions like arthritis, fractures, and sports injuries.
They may also use X-rays to determine the underlying cause of joint pain, including:
- Hip pain
- Knee pain
- Back and neck pain
- Foot and ankle pain
- Hand and wrist pain
- Shoulder pain
- Elbow pain
X-rays and MRIs also provide important information your provider may need before recommending a treatment like joint replacement surgery.
How safe is an X-ray?
X-rays are quick, noninvasive tests that produce radiation, but at very low levels. The benefits of getting an X-ray far outweigh the risks of radiation exposure. However, you should tell your doctor if you’re pregnant or may be pregnant because they may recommend a different type of imaging test.
