Experiencing Joint Pain

A joint forms where the ends of two or more of your bones meet. Your joint also contains a number of soft tissues, including ligaments that keep your joint in place and protective cartilage that covers the ends of your bones and prevents them from rubbing together. Severely damaged joints or joint deformities can be debilitating and keep you from a physically active life.

At Southern Oregon Orthopedics, our orthopedic surgeons in Medford and Grants Pass, Oregon, specialize in minimally invasive joint replacement surgery to ease your pain and restore full function in your joint.

Do I Need to See a Total Joint Expert?

If you suffer from chronic hip or knee pain and conservative therapies aren’t providing relief, you might be a candidate for joint replacement surgery, also known as total joint surgery.

Your joints are flexible and allow you to move in a variety of ways. However, as you age, your joint structures can wear out and lead to pain and loss of your range of motion. In addition to aging, there are conditions that can affect the health and function of your joints, including:

  • Deformities
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Severe fractures

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are conditions that lead to severe joint damage and deformity. These conditions affect the protective tissues in your joint, which leads to inflammation and joint damage.

Severe joint fractures are another reason our team at Southern Oregon Orthopedics recommends joint replacement. When you break a bone in your hip or knee, it sometimes causes permanent damage to other tissues in your joint. In that case, the only way to treat that damage is by replacing the joint with a prosthetic.

If you experience any of these problems with chronic pain and inflammation in your joints, a total joint care doctor can help.

How Can I Get a Diagnosis & Treatment for My Joint Condition?

Southern Oregon Orthopedics offers on-site diagnostic services, including digital X-rays and MRI and CT scans, to evaluate the structures of your joint and identify the underlying cause of joint pain or immobility.

Our team will work with you to find nonsurgical solutions for your pain and other symptoms. If these therapies no longer provide relief, our doctors will further evaluate to determine if joint replacement is right for you as well as which approach will work best for your needs and goals.

Joint replacement is a surgical procedure to replace a joint damaged by injuries or arthritis with an artificial joint (prosthesis). The prosthesis functions just like your natural joint, giving you full range of motion and relieving chronic pain.

The hips and knees are the most common joints our providers at Southern Oregon Orthopedics replace. However, if you have severe damage in the joints of your wrist, ankle, shoulder, or elbow, you might also be a candidate for joint replacement surgery.

Our doctors focus on restoring your joint function with physical therapy and other conservative treatments. Minimally invasive joint replacement surgeries, including Mako SmartRobotics™, are also available to restore the function of your hip or knee joint.

If you have had a complication with a previous joint replacement surgery or if you develop swelling and pain in the years after your initial joint replacement, experts also offer joint revision surgery. This treatment replaces all or part of the previous prosthesis to ensure you can regain your joint function.

About Total Joint Replacement Surgery

Total joint replacement surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. However, in some cases, local anesthetic and sedation may be used. If your condition allows, the team may use minimally invasive techniques to repair your joint.

During the procedure, your surgeon at Southern Oregon Orthopedics removes the damaged areas in the affected joint. Once the area is ready, prosthetics made of metal or ceramics are placed in the joint to restore normal functionality. Surgical cement holds these prosthetics in place.

Once your team finishes the procedure, they close the incision and cover it with a dressing. You’re then taken to the recovery area and either discharged home or taken to a room in the hospital for observation.

Physical therapy is a large part of the recovery process, helping you regain normal motion and flexibility in your new joint.

Your pain should subside within a few weeks, and you may be back to your normal activities within six months. However, it could take up to a year to fully recover from a total joint replacement in some cases.
