About

Matthew J. Bengard, M.D., is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon fellowship-trained in hand and upper extremity surgery. He serves patients throughout the region in Medford, Oregon, at Southern Oregon Orthopedics.

Dr. Bengard completed his medical degree at UC San Diego, followed by a residency at Washington University in St. Louis. He credits the world-class program at Washington University with sparking his interest in hand surgery. During his fellowship training in Manhattan, he also received specialized pediatric orthopedics training at Texas Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital.

Because he grew up in the Rogue Valley, Dr. Bengard understands the people of this community and works hard to translate that into a personal connection with each patient that allows him to be more effective as their physician. A cornerstone of Dr. Bengard’s approach is founded on the principles of preventative medicine and helping patients achieve a better quality of life.

“I love the chance to make ‘believers’ out of patients. Some come in with terrible pain and dysfunction – and they think it can’t or won’t ever get better. I’m able to offer them a chance to improve their quality of life – sometimes in small ways and sometimes in very dramatic ways. It is both personally and professionally rewarding to be the person who accompanies them on that journey.”

Having dedicated his life to serving the underserved, Dr. Bengard has volunteered his surgical expertise in third-world hospitals of Paraguay, served in the Peace Corps, and worked in education and social services before beginning his medical career. He is bilingual in English and Spanish and enjoys working with patients of all backgrounds.

Dr. Bengard is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
