Knee Replacement at the Orthopedic Outpatient Center: One Man’s Story

For years, Southern Oregon native Bill L. battled knee pain and instability. A former student football player and lifelong outdoorsman, he found that activities he once enjoyed—hunting, fishing, and even walking on uneven terrain—became increasingly difficult. “I probably could have done this five or eight years ago,” he admitted. “But I think there have been so many advances in knee replacement in that time. It was the right decision for me.”

After consulting his primary care provider, he was referred to board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic specialist Dr. Todd Clevenger at Southern Oregon Orthopedics. “I did some checking around, and Dr. Clevenger was highly recommended,” he said. He scheduled his left knee replacement surgery at the state-of-the-art facility near the Medford Airport, our Orthopedic Outpatient Center, and he was impressed with the experience.

The procedure went smoothly, and within hours, he was walking down the hallway and climbing stairs. “It was incredible. I went home the same day, and the post-op instructions were clear. The staff was friendly, and the care was top-notch.”

Physical therapy played a crucial role in his recovery. He attended sessions at the same Southern Oregon Orthopedics location and built a strong connection with his therapists.

“People underestimate how important PT is after knee replacement,” Bill said. “They pushed me—but in a good way. It became a challenge for me to surpass their expectations. The doctor wanted me to reach a certain degree of flexibility, the physical therapist had a higher goal, and I wanted to go beyond that.” With dedication, he exceeded all expectations, gaining mobility and strength he hadn’t had in years.

Now, nearly a year after surgery, he continues to improve. “I’m able to do things I couldn’t prior to the surgery. I can stand on a rock pile after we drill and shoot a quarry, walk on unstable ground, and I’ve been able to go hunting again.”

Encouraged by his results, he plans to schedule his right knee replacement soon. “I should have done it sooner,” he reflected, echoing what’s said by so many knee replacement patients he’s known.

He also wants more people to know about Southern Oregon Orthopedics’ Walk-In Clinic. “If you have a broken bone or a bad sprain, you don’t have to go to the ER. Their orthopedic urgent care is a game-changer.”

For Bill, the journey through knee replacement has been one of regained mobility and newfound confidence. “It’s amazing what they can do now,” he said. “I can’t say enough good things about it.”
